HISPANICS ONLINE IN RECORD NUMBERS

US Hispanics are using the Internet more than ever. New surveys reveal that 50% of the 22 million Hispanic adults in the US have Internet access.

  • The Latino Internet population is growing twice as fast as the white Internet population on a percentage basis.
  • The number of Hispanics online has jumped by 25 percent over the last year alone.
  • The percentage of Hispanics online lags behind the 58 percent of whites online. But their number exceeds the 43 percent of Blacks on the web.
  • Latinos are just as involved with online banking as whites; about 12 percent of Latinos have dabbled in stock trading online compared to 13 percent for whites and 10 percent for African Americans; 41 percent have purchased goods or services online, compared to 49 percent of whites and 40 percent of African Americans.

As always, we love to hear from you. If you have suggestions on future topics, just drop us a line.

US HISPANIC AND DIVERSITY NEWS

Charges of harassment at work based on race or national origin have more than doubled, to nearly 9,000 a year, since 1990, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

  • Legal damage awards are rising nearly as quickly. Most recently, the EEOC announced a $635,000 racial discrimination settlement against Salomon Smith Barney, a subsidiary of Citigroup.

A new demographic study reveals that young, urban Hispanics (18-34) are generally wealthier than all other ethnic groups--including Caucasians. 14.3% have household incomes above $50,000, whereas the national average is 13.6%.

Hector Barreto, the son of a Mexican immigrant, is named the new administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

BUSINESS BYTES

Despite the fact that Hispanics are online in record numbers, many large-scale Latino-oriented Web sites are struggling to survive

  • For example, El Sitio announced a 1-for-10 reverse share split in an effort to enable it to comply with the minimum share price requirements of The Nasdaq.

THE LEGAL FRONT

Despite tech sector downturns, the use of skilled Foreign Workers is on the rise in the U.S.. A recent report reveals the INS approved 40% more H-1B visas in the first half of 2001 than in the first half of 2000.
